Across this world this evening, millions of men pretended that onions were to blame for the tears in their eyes as they watched Andy Murray give an incredibly emotional speech after losing the Wimbledon final.
Murray put up a good fight against Roger Federer in the final, but the smooth, suave Swiss was just too good in the end and soared to his seventh ever Wimbledon title in four sets of often breathtaking quality.
Given the status and class of the man, there were few who begrudged Federer his victory and he accepted his win with typical grace afterwards. Prior to that, however, Murray pulled at the heartstrings of the millions watching worldwide as he struggled to hold back the tears in an incredibly emotional post-match interview on centre court.
For a man that has been heavily criticised for being a man of little emotion, there was no holding back and you’d have to be made of stone not to have been affected in some way, even if we’re sure that it was those damn onions and the dust in your eye that were the source of the tears rolling down your cheek. At least, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Check it out for yourself in the video above. Andy, it’s been emotional.
