Roddy Collins was understandably in good form after Monaghan United’s first league win of the season last night, but it was still a surprise to hear him channel Gloria Gaynor in the post-match interview afterwards.
Despite having their ‘keeper sent off after only three minutes, the magic Mons claimed a memorable 2-1 victory at Dalymount Park thanks to some heroics from substitute netminder Michael Schlingermann and a late winner from another replacement, Jason Marks.
Roddy was in mighty form after the match, but he was taken aback when one interviewer put it to him that such a victory could go a long way to Monaghan’s survival, even though there’s only been eight games played this season.
“Survival, what are you talking about? Is he having a laugh?” Roddy said.
“Survival, there’s how many games to go, twenty what? You tell me are we going to survive.”
The intrepid reporter continued with the line of questioning until interrupted by Roddy, who grabbed the microphone and launched into an impromptu version of ‘I will survive’, much to the amusement of everyone present.
In flying form at this stage, Roddy continued to wind up his interviewer by claiming that his side went into the game only half determined and suggesting that he might have to give up managing and go back plastering.
Roddy might have his critics, but he’s certainly a colourful character and the football world would be a far more amusing place if every post match interview was more like this one.
On the evidence of that tone-deaf showing, however, we wouldn’t be recommending that Roddy give up the day job.
Check out the hilarious interview for yourself in the video above.
A shout out to the folks at ExtraTime.ie for their help with this one.
