Video: St. Ledger – It’s all about three points

It may be one of the most over-used clichés in football, but Irish defender Sean St. Ledger reckons it’s all about the three points when Armenia come to town this evening.

It may be one of the most over-used clichés in football, but Irish defender Sean St. Ledger reckons it’s all about the three points when Armenia come to town this evening.

Ridiculed as probable minnows when the draw for the group stages was first made, Armenia have proved to be an entirely different proposition altogether and come to the Aviva Stadium in tremendous nick, having scored eight goals in their last two outings against Slovakia and Macedonia.

Consequently, a win tonight for the visitors would catapult them over Ireland into second place and into a play-off spot and break the hearts of Irish people still grieving over the disastrous Rugby World Cup defeat to Wales at the weekend.

Ireland need only a draw to ensure a place in the play-offs, but adopting a cagey approach is a dangerous game and defender Sean St. Ledger is adamant that the Boys in Green will be going all out for the three points to secure the play-off spot in style.

Ahead of tonight’s crucial encounter, check out what Sean had to say about the game in the video above.

St. Ledger was speaking at the launch of Three’s new Irish football team mascots, who are calling on all fans to ‘go green with pride’

Three, proud sponsors of the Republic of Ireland football team, launch the new official football team mascots. The new mascots will be given names by fans of the RTE show “ELEV8” and will make their Ireland debut outside the Aviva stadium and pitch-side for the crucial qualifying match against Armenia.

Three also announced the extension of the Three Jersey trade-in scheme, that gives Irish fans the chance to trade-in their old Ireland football jerseys in any Champion Sports store nationwide to get €20 off the brand-new Republic of Ireland home jersey. The traded-in jerseys will be collected and donated to ‘Friends in Ireland’, a charity founded by Marian Finucane that cares for orphans and vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa.
