Video: The worst miss ever in Irish football?

You’re five yards out, the goalkeeper’s gone walkabout and the goal is at your mercy. Easy tap-in right? Not for St. Pat’s midfielder Sean Stewart it wasn’t.

You’re five yards out, the goalkeeper’s gone walkabout and the goal is at your mercy. Easy tap-in right? Not for St. Pat’s midfielder Sean Stewart it wasn’t.

Stewart will have nightmares about his glaring miss from the edge of the six-yard box in the 3-0 Leinster Senior Cup quarter-final victory over Athlone Town on Tuesday night, after he had worked so hard to keep in line with the last defender and avoid being caught offside.

Instead of guiding the ball into the net, Stewart hit the ball with his hell and the ball crawled all the way across the goal and agonisingly wide of the post. Even the home fans in Inchicore, in buoyant mood due to the easy nature of the contest against an Athlone side with only 14 players due to exam commitments, taunted Stewart with chants of ‘What the fu**ing hell was that?’

Fortunately for Stewart, he had made a spectacular impact earlier on in the game with a quite splendid strike from outside the area (see clip below), but let’s face it, which Stewart contribution from the night is going to live longest in the memory?
