If only rugby was always this simple.

You’ll often hear rugby players and coaches stress the importance of the kick-off or the restart (Kieran Read certainly pays attention), but mainly as a means of securing possession rather than a direct route to scoring a try.

Fijian sevens side Daveta benefitted from using it for the latter reason in the final of the Central Coast Sevens International Rugby Festival Final at the weekend, with winger Vili Mata crossing the whitewash after just eight seconds by catching the ball immediately from the kick-off and running in unimpeded under the posts.

Daveta never looked back after VIli’s try and went onto defeat Wellington 31-19 in the final and while we’re not sure if it’s the fastest try ever scored in a rugby match, together with Lee Blackett’s effort for Leeds Carnegie in the Aviva Premiership a few years back, it must be pretty close…
