Australia 39-20 South Africa

In what could be an ominous sign of things to come for Ireland, Australia notched an impressive 19-point victory over South Africa in the opening game of the Tri-Nations in Sydney.

James O’Connor scored 19 points in a clash in which the Wallabies landed five tries through O’Connor, Ben Alexander, Digby Ioane, Stephen Moore and Adam Ashley-Cooper, a perfect response to their shock defeat to Samoa last week.

Ireland fans shouldn’t be unduly worried, however, as the travelling Springboks side were without a whole host of first team regulars, who rather conveniently picked up a number of niggling injuries that caused them to miss the game with the World Cup less than two months away.

Because of the World Cup, the format of the Tri-Nations has been amended this year and will feature only six games between the southern hemisphere’s big guns, rather than the usual nine games.

Check out the video above to see all the tries from Australia’s impressive victory.

The Wallabies will play Ireland in a crucial Pool C encounter at the Rugby World Cup in Auckland on 17 September.
