Never mind Haye/Chisora, the best British heavyfight of the year was last night between David Price and Sam Sexton. It ended in spectacular fashion.
Heavyweight boxing is, frankly, in a mess right now. The Klitschkos are good but uncharismatic, David Haye and Dereck Chisora is a ghastly sideshow and America seems to have stopped producing heavyweights altogether.
We have Tyson Fury but with the best will in the world, he is not from the very top rank, even if he will get a title shot soon.
But last night, the British heavyweight title was up for grabs and perhaps, just perhaps, a new British heavyweight star emerged.
David Price, a 6’8” Liverpudlian, certainly has the physique to compete with the Klitshckos and last night he showed Sam Sexton that he has the power to back up his size.
In the fourth round, Price dropped Sexton with a fine uppercut but Sexton, a former Commonwealth champ, recovered to continue. However, Price would go on to move his record to 13-0 with a devastating short, sharp right hook that ended the bout in a single blow.
We know boxing is intrinsically linked with overhype but Price may be the man to put some order on the most famed of divisions. At 28 he has to get cracking but according to his promoter Frank Maloney he won’t be rushed.
But after watching this round, we are sure you will want to see him in action next time he fights. The full fourth round, until the brutal conclusion, is above but if you just want to see the conclusion skip to the replays that start at around 3.45.
