Brendan Rodgers’ men crash out of the Champions League at the group stages…
Despite a late flurry, it wasn’t to be for Liverpool in the Champions League this season as Basel delivered the final blow to their C.L campaign this evening with a dramatic 1-1 draw at Anfield.
The Swiss side took a well deserved lead in the 25th minute thanks to Fabian Frei and they could have added to their tally as they made the better of the chances.
Substitute Lazar Markovic was sent-off for Liverpool in the 60th miniute following this “contact” which looks incredibly harsh to us.
Steven Gerrard did his best to channel the ‘Olympiakos’ spirit with this peach of a free-kick with 10 minutes left but despite a hectic final 10 minutes it wasn’t enough.
Here’ how Twitter reacted to a disappointing night at Anfield.
Liverpool on the precipice. Still, they’ll always have that “character” they showed in the Bernabeu. — Daniel Storey (@danielstorey85) December 9, 2014
So Liverpool’s tactic tonight is hope to f*** Gerrard drags them through. That is so 2005

HEAT MAP: Rickie Lambert not threatening much for Liverpool yet. pic.twitter.com/IIysK1Ifak — Squawka Football (@Squawka) December 9, 2014
Liverpool haven’t even been able to get simple 5 yard passes right. It’s like going for a big job interview but failing to put on trousers

coutinho is liverpool’s best technical player so why is he sitting on the bench for a home game they desperately need to win? — Ken Early (@kenearlys) December 9, 2014
Major lack of urgency and quality from Liverpool. I do hope they understand they have to win.#subsgetready

7 – Liverpool have gone seven Champions League games without keeping a clean sheet, their longest such run since November 2008. Uphill.

Oliver’s Army playing at Anfield h-t. Liverpool might need the boys from the Thames and the Tyne as well as the Mersey to rescue this. — Henry Winter (@henrywinter) December 9, 2014
Still though, if Liverpool get through this, they really can win the Champions Le… Hahahahahaaaa. Brilliant Brendan. Just brilliant

Liverpool down to 9.Markovic sent off and Joe Allen nowhere to be seen — Peter Stringer (@stringer9) December 9, 2014
I tell you who Liverpool need now, Florent Sinama-Pongolle #SpiritOfOlympiakos

I wonder if #Liverpool have considered starting matches with 10 men as an alternative to playing Joe Allen? #LFCvsFCBasel — Martin Samuel (@themartinsamuel) December 9, 2014

Strong call by the ref given the atmosphere and the fact he owes Liverpool for the red card. — Eoin McDevitt (@EoinMcDevitt) December 9, 2014
0 – Liverpool have never lost at Anfield in the Champions League when Steven Gerrard has scored (W11 D1). Lifeline?

I’m worried about what might happen to Clive and Andy if Liverpool score a late winner. A love child would be unbearable.

— Ricky (@Rickyboshe) December 9, 2014
Forget Gerrard super goal & unjust red card, Liverpool out because they are simply not good enough. Signings poor & behind-scenes problems.

Crystal ball: Liverpool lose to United, gets vote of confidence but gone before January. No way they'll give him money to spend.
