VINE: Proud and shameful scenes from the Melbourne Cup on a very eventful day

Michelle Payne goes down in history.

Michelle Payne goes down in history.

Nothing can detract from the remarkable achievement of Michelle Payne as she became the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup after she rode 100 to 1 shot, Prinze of Penzance, to victory in one of the most prestigious and competitive races in the world.

Payne, only the fourth female to ride in the Cup during its 155-year history, came out on top with the Willie Mullins trained Max Dynamite in second.

Her she is speaking with local news about her spectacular achievement.

It seems that one spectator got carried away with the events of the day though after she decided that it would be a good idea to push a nearby steward (the gentleman in question may also be a police officer but we think he’s a steward). Naturally the authorities intervened and escorted her away.
