Australia 30-13 South Africa
Reigning World Cup champions South Africa’s miserable run in the 2010 Tri-Nations continued this morning after the Springboks suffered a 17-point defeat to Australia in Brisbane.
The hosts led 17-3 at the break after Matt Giteau landed four penalties to add to Drew Mitchell’s try, which the winger landed just before the half-time break.
Giteau added two more penalties after the break to put his side 20 points ahead entering the final quarter and the Wallabies looked set to cruise to victory.
With Quade Cooper sin-binned for a dangerous tackle on Morne Steyn, however, the visitors mounted a late comeback with Jacques Fourie and Gurthro Steenkamp both touching down to reduce the deficit.
Any hopes of an improbable comeback were ended by Australia with five minutes to go when scrum-half Will Genia crossed the line to seal a relatively comfortable victory.
