Formula One used to be lamented for its predictability, but one can’t say that about this season after Mark Webber became the sixth winner in six races with victory in Monaco.
It is the first time in the history of Formula One that there have been such a variety of winners in the first six races and such were the fine margins at Monaco this afternoon, it could have been anyone’s race right up until the closing stages.
Only a few seconds separated the top six at the end of the 78 laps, but Red Bull driver Webber emerged at the top of the pile to claim his second victory in three years at the most glamorous of all Formula One destinations.
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg finished marginally behind Webber in second, with Fernando Alonso also featuring on the podium and Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa making up the top six.
“I’m feeling incredible,” said Webber after the race.
“It was an interesting race. The first phase of the race was strange. It was hard to get the soft prime tyre warmed up.
“Seb had his tyres in and wasn’t wearing them so he was coming back into the picture. I didn’t want him to get the magic 21 second gap and take the lead.
“It’s an amazing day for the team, myself and really happy to have won here again.”
Webber’s win pushes him to joint second along with Sebastian Vettel in the driver’s standings, with both trailing Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso by three points.
His Red Bull team are far and away best placed in the constructor’s standings, currently leading McLaren by 38 points.
