Sunderland loanee and England under-21 international Danny Wellbeck may be about to shelve his England ambition in order to play for Ghana.
The 20-year old, who was born in Manchester to Ghanaian parents, has made 30 appearances for England at youth level.
His teammates at the Black Cats have been attempting to persuade him to declare himself for the Ghana national team.
“Myself and John Mensah have spoken to him about playing for Ghana,” Asamoah Gyan told The Journal. “He has not made up his mind yet and says he needs more time to think through it.
“He is a very good player, young and talented so he will be helpful to Ghana, but we need to give him more time.”
Wellbeck has been very impressive for Sunderland this season, finding the net six times in 20 appearances.
There are currently Ghanaian internationals playing for Sunderland – Gyan, Mensah and Inter Milan loanee Sulleyman Muntari.
