This is why Facebook are letting people react to posts with a purple flower

Alan Loughnane

In case you were wondering…

You may have noticed a new reaction to posts appearing on your Facebook timeline over the past few days.

The pretty purple flower has become more and more prevalent on the social media site, and when you hover over the new reaction, it simply says; “Thankful”.

Well, it was actually introduced because of Mother’s Day (the American one, not the Irish one) according to Facebook.

“In honour of Mother’s Day, we are testing the ability for people in a few markets to leave a flower reaction,” Facebook said in blogpost.

“When a person chooses this temporary flower reaction, they’ll see something special that wraps around the post they’re reacting to.”

While you may not have seen it available to you in Ireland, as it hasn’t hit our shores (yet), you will have seen it on various posts online.

Last year for Mother’s Day, the purple flower was introduced on the social networking site, and it disappeared after the celebrations were over.

In 2016, Mother’s Day drove more than 105 million Mother’s Day posts.
