For the most part, we get a kick out of Facebook’s nostalgia bend. Seeing photos of ourselves from 2008 or embarrassing status we made about being worried on the eve of our Leaving Cert results are almost always good for a laugh.
But Facebook has also been criticised for “inadvertent algorithmic cruelty”, whereby its ‘On This Day’ feature bombards unsuspecting users with unwelcome reminders of dead relatives, ex-girlfriends or memories that the user would simply rather forget.
Facebook has now taken steps to resolve this problem, allowing Bookers to take the matter into their own hands and decide which content Facebook can and cannot exhume.
Facebook users can edit their memory filters on their On This Day page by instructing Facebook not share memories from certain dates, or relating to certain people.
