With the trailers almost here, we thought we’d take a look at our favourite moments from Grand Theft Auto titles of the past

Grand Theft Auto V will be out soon, and with the trailers also landing today to whet our appetite even more, we’ve been reminsicing in the JOE offices about our favourite moments from all the previous titles. So many hours of our lives have been given in the pursuit of some of these fantastic moments of pure joy/carnage.

Getting six stars and stealing a tank

For some reason that we can’t quite explain, getting chased around by every police car, tank, helicopter and FBI law man in existence was the best fun you could have, especially if you managed to knick a tank off them, or even better, if you could get an elusive FBI jeep. Ah, days well spent… and if you got your hands on a rocket launcher it got really fun.

Listening to the radio

The lads in charge of the soundtrack at Rockstar are clearly big into their music, as their radio stations were top class. Radio Los Santos was blasting some seriously old school rap in San Andreas, while Vice City’s Flash FM pumped out some of the biggest hits going. There were also all the chat stations which had banter back and forth and their hilarious ads, like GTA III’s Chatterbox hosted by Lazlow Jones. If you’ve got a spare hour, listen to this:

Driving a taxi or police car and doing the missions

For some reason, being a vigilante and bringing justice to the streets even though we were supposed to be criminals was very satisfying. We also enjoyed being a taxi driver, for no apparent reason, and if you managed to steal an ambulance, there was even more enjoyment in store.

Getting drunk

The option of heading to the bar when you had to go socialise in the game was a great addition, and made the whole thing more immersive. The end result however, was it also made it much more difficult to walk or even stand up straight. It did make the in-game darts and pool much more challenging though.

Base jumping

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas introduced us to the idea of getting a parachute on and base jumping, and this could not have been a cooler addition at the time. JOE’s personal favourite thing to do was to cycle our bike to the top of Mt Chiliad or Los Santos Tower and cycle off the top of it. Or you could just jump off like this guy.
