Google Maps can now tell you where you were and what you were up to on certain dates in the past

Google never forgets

Conor Heneghan

If you want to know, of course.

As if it doesn’t already wield enough of an influence on our lives, Google will soon be able to tell you where you were in the past, provided you used one of the incredibly wide range of Google services on the day in question.

Google are gradually rolling out a feature known as Your Timeline, which allows users to remember and view places they were on a given month, day or year and is yet another Google tool which nearly obliterates the need for memory altogether.

Through Google Maps, your timeline allows you to visualise your real-life routines and see the trips you’ve taken and if you use Google Photos, you can even look back on photos that you took on a selected date.

A number of the services available in Your Timeline were already available in Google Location History, but this one is a little bit niftier and more visually appealing.

You don’t have to let the world know what you were up to either; Your Timeline is private and visible only to you; and you control the locations you choose to keep.

You can delete a day or full history whenever you want, you can save specific locations and even give them a private name, which will then appear in your Google Maps.

Such a service could come in handy, for example, when notifications are provided to let you know that there’s a traffic jam on your usual route to work.

Your Timeline is available on Desktop and Android and you can check it out for yourself here, even if it’s finally to see what exactly happened on that hazy Friday night last November when you had a few pints too many.
