Here’s what you need to know about Google renaming itself to Alphabet

The global takeover gathers pace

Paul Moore

The global takeover gathers pace.

I’d wager that there isn’t a single tech-reliant person that doesn’t use Google on a daily basis and but the online giant has been in the news for something very different than it’s accustomed to last night.

Co-founder Sergey Brin announced plans for a massive reorganisation last night and here’s what we know so far.

What’s the new name?

Google will now become a subsidiary of a new holding company called Alphabet which will allow the co-founders, Brin and Page, more scope to undertake some ambitious new ventures.

Why are they doing this?

The company mantra has always stressed the importance of innovation and change, this is just further proof of that. Google’s business interests aren’t just confined to some of their more popular products like the search engine, YouTube, Maps and Gmail.  They’re also pushing the boundaries in their Life Sciences division, X-Lab and longevity research arm Calico.

The co-founders believe that managing all of these ventures, interests and projects have become too diverse and sprawling for a single operating company to manage hence the change.

Different companies will have different CEO’s, cultures, staff requirements etc.

This is simply the next step towards making Google, now Alphabet, into an even bigger corporation by adopting a conglomerate model.

Will the name of Google.com change?

No. Having built up an incredibly reliable and world known brand, it’s highly unlikely that people will ever be uttering the phrase ‘Alphabet it’.

Will it impact your internet habits?

Highly unlikely as every one of the aforementioned Google services like YouTube, the search engine and Gmail will continue to operate as they’ve done before.

What makes Alphabet different?

From the perspective of any shareholders, Alphabet is just a new name for the company that used to be called Google. Google shares will now become Alphabet shares. More details regarding Alphabet’s corporate structure remain to be seen but it’s an exciting time for the online giant.
