The world of digital marketing is tough to keep track of, which is why the Digital Marketing Institute has launched its Membership Programme to help digital enthusiasts keep track of trends and changes in the online world through events and refresher courses. The first such event took place yesterday in European Google HQ, and here’s how it went down.

This week we had the first DMI members’ event of the year and what a great success it was! Obviously the location – Google European HQ – was an attractive factor, but the presentations from Google staff were certainly worth an early start.

The morning started with some light breakfast and networking among DMI team, Google employees and our members. It was great to see the room packed with over 200 digital marketing enthusiasts, with some of the groups looking like they were having proper class reunions!

At 8am Ian Dodson, one of the founders of the Digital Marketing Institute, welcomed everyone to the event. Ian highlighted how important it is to keep up to date in the fast developing industry of digital marketing and that Digital Marketing Institute is very happy to help our members with that through regular events.

The next speaker was Gavin Hanley, who shared great tips on very useful but highly overlooked reports you can find inside Dimensions tab in your AdWords account. Through this tab you are able to see, for example, what day of the week and what time are your ads performing best, and optimise your budget distribution accordingly.

In addition to that, if you are targeting the whole country, the Geo report under Dimensions will reveal in which cities your ads are most popular. There are plenty other interesting bits to uncover in that underused part of AdWords, so make sure to log in and take a look yourself.

After the short tutorial on Google AdWords, Sarah O’Neill took over with a fascinating presentation on mobile marketing. Two key points she stressed were to test your website on various devices to ensure it looks good on all of them, and enable click to call option on your AdWords ads for mobiles, which can be done within Ad Extensions tab (provided your ads are displayed on mobile phones).

Overall, the event was a great success and received plenty of coverage on Twitter (@dmigroup), with attendees posting some of the below live updates during the DMI presentation:

“#dmigoogle google first time this month had more mobile searches than desk top!”

“By End of this year 71% of Irish population will be online on mobile devices #dmigoogle”

“Google girl advocates http://howtogomo.com website to test websites in mobile environments. #dmigoogle”

“At #dmigoogle (@ Google Dublin w/ 8 others) [pic]: http://4sq.com/J31iob”

“Google says if you don’t have a mobile marketing strategy, you don’t have a marketing strategy! #dmigoogle”

“#dmigoogle great lecture, project glass is pretty cool”
