Does Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson have more money than sense? That depends on whether you’d be willing to fork out $13 million for Psychonauts 2.
Since beginning creation of the compulsive sandbox-style building game less than two years, the Swede has seen Minecraft become a cultural and financial phenomenon, with 22 million registered players and 5 million purchasers of the final build as of this writing.
With so much money flowing in, Notch had decided to answer the obscure dreams of certain video gaming fanboys everywhere – he wants a sequel to the much-loved financial flop Psychonauts, developed by Double Fine Productions back in 2005. Not only does Notch want a sequel, it appears as though he’s happy to foot the entire cost of the game.
After shocking his own fans and gamers everywhere by signaling his intentions on Twitter last week, it appears as though Notch has been in touch with Double Fine since.
As the developrs’ head honcho Tim Schafer explained to Kotaku: “I was like, ‘I don’t think you can make [it] for a million dollars.”
“The original game was, I think, $13 million, I think you have to match the original game. As soon as I mentioned the amount of money he said, ‘Yeah, I can do that.'”
It sounds like Notch is ready to put his money where his mouth is and when you consider that he could advertise the game within Minecraft, suddenly the potential to recoup his investment doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Now if only Notch was a Shenmue fan too…
