Playstation turns 18, so here are five of the best PS1 games

The 18th anniversary of the iconic Playstation One console has us all misty-eyed and feeling old this week.

Time to start feeling old and looking back to our lost childhoods, but since it’s right before Christmas you can drown your sorrows with the 12 Pubs.

Playstation 1 is celebrating its 18th birthday this week (they grow up so fast, don’t they?), which sent us reminiscing back through the days of playing Crash Bandicoot and Tomb Raider.

Released in December of 1994 in Japan, the Playstation was involved in a full on brand war with the Nintendo 64 from day one.

As an upstart in the video game world, it didn’t seem that Sony ever had a prayer, but the console was successful thanks to a seemingly never-ending stream of hit titles, many of which are considered the best ever games in their genres.

We here at JOE have to stand tall to salute this ground breaking and life changing machine, so here’s five of the best Playstation One games we’ve ever played:

5: Tekken

We didn’t think you could ever challenge Street Fighter, but then they told us we could fight as a guy in Jaguar mask.

4: Fifa Road to World Cup 98

Blur Song 2, indoor matches ending 34-26 and the rainbow flick… this game had everything.

3: Tomb Raider

We all know why we played Tomb Raider, lads… because there were challenging puzzles to solve.

2: Resident Evil

Scared us silly from start to finish (and still does, if we’re honest). Thoroughly creepy and engrossing game.

1: Metal Gear Solid

This was the first real stealth ’em up game, plus you could hide inside a cardboard box. What more could you want.

We’re fairly confident that we haven’t missed out on anything important, but feel free to let us know if we have in the comment section below.
