If you’re going to attempt to emulate the best, then you’d better do a half decent job of it. Shame nobody told the developers at Team Tachyon, the criminals behind Tecmo’s Quantum Theory. This half-assed Gears of War wannabe is a meek, timid and downright embarrassing Gears clone that has little or no redeeming qualities.
Where do I begin? Gears of War this is not. Nearly every facet of the game, from its visual style right down to its rudimentary game play mechanics are modelled on Gears. Except Gears isn’t terrible while Quantum Theory is a disaster.
You play as Syd, a warrior who must destroy the mysterious organic living towers inhabited by the creatures and misfortunate’s that inhabit this interesting but ultimately poorly constructed world. The story isn’t particularly interesting, hampered further by terrible cut scenes and laboured story telling. Characters often times rely on cheesy western spoof 80’s dialogue. Delivery is inherently bad, embarrassing and cringe worthy.
Visually the game falls at nearly every hurdle. It’s a scurried mess of sharp edges, clumsy animations and dark broody colours that only reiterate how bland the entire experience is. Levels are dull, lazy and riddled with tedious repetitive tasks. Combat is ok, but again lacks any kind of personality or inclination of originality. That said, some of the weaponry is interesting, not least throwing your female partner Filena to slice and dice your enemies. It’s about the only redeemable and somewhat interesting mechanic attached to the game.
Online play is tagged on but is easily as shameless. In 3 months time, I doubt many will be playing Quantum Theory online.
Quantum Theory is ultimately a shameless incompetent Gears of War clone. Buy it at your peril. You’d we better off spending €20 on a second copy of Gears of War 2. That would make more sense.
