Sony has officially unveiled the PSP2, codenamed ‘NGP’ or ‘Next Generation Platform’ at a Japanese press conference this morning.
The PSP2 boasts a front and rear camera, a right-sided analogue stick, motion control from a six-axis motion sensing system with a three-axis gyroscope, built-in stereo speakers and microphone, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi location service support. Some industry insiders have speculated that the handheld may be ‘as powerful as a PS3’.
Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said as much, stating ‘“On NGP, we can enjoy the same quality as PS3,” at the event. Kojima demoed Metal Gear Solid 4 at the show.
New Yakuza, Monster Hunter and Lost Planet titles were also announced as playable for handheld, while later announcements that Uncharted and Call of Duty have also been promised should entice gamers everywhere. The NGP will also have trophy support and players will apparently be able to download full PS2 titles.
