Today’s Google Doodle makes very clear point about gay rights and the Winter Olympics

Nice one Google.

Nice one Google.

While we saw some events take place yesterday, today is the official kick off of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. The opening ceremony begins at 4pm Irish time, commencing just over a fortnight of sporting action.

But the Games have been overshadowed by two factors; enormous, and controversial overspending and how gay visitors to Sochi will be treated. Russia’s recent anti-gay laws are deeply wrong and recent comments from Vladimir Putin, warning gay visitors to ‘leave kids alone’ suggest that extremely skewed thinking rules the roost in the Kremlin these days.

With that in mind, Google have used their Doodle today to make a very clear point about equality for all.

Underneath a rainbow banner made up of winter sportspeople in action they quote the Olympic Charter;

“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”

Simple, and hopefully effective.
