Tired of dropping your handheld devices into pools of water or from a great height? Try then try out the world’s first ‘indestructible’ camera from Olympus.

Years ago I stripped my bed sheets and threw them in my washing machine, before enquiring to my housemates as to where my phone had gone. Minutes into my spin cycle I heard a large, recurring ‘bump’ from the appliance, my beloved Motorola bobbing around its watery grave.

Before that faithful day, one morning I went to grab a Nokia I was resting on the top of my shower door (!), to check the time (!!) and watched it fall to the ground. 9 years ago I left a first generation iPod (not available in Ireland at the time) on top of a friend’s car while I collecting my luggage from the boot, forgetting to return to it.

As you can tell, I am a frequent abuser of phones and while I won’t excuse my wanton disregard for my mobile device, I know am not alone. Hence the Olympus TG-810, the world’s first ‘indestructible’ camera, has cornered a grateful market

Crushproof up to a weight of 100kg, Olympus are boasting that thanks to double-durable lens and port technology, the TG-810 is also waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof and scratch resistant to an unprecedented degree.

How careless of that man… tsk, tsk

With its built-in manometer, unique three-sensor GPS, electronic compass and high-resolution glare-resistant HyperCrystal III LCD, this is a camera that is packed with features and cannot be accused of being a gimmick.

According to Olympus, the TG-810 is waterproof to a depth of 10m, shockproof to a height of 2m and freezeproof to -10°C. There’s even a built-in manometer to make sure you don’t dive too deep, while i-Underwater Snapshot, one of four underwater settings, detects when the camera is submerged and adjusts white balance automatically to ensure excellent pics – even in optional 3D.

Similar to the other two Olympus cameras from their ‘TOUGH’ range, the TG-810 offers easy editing and sharing; for example, Eye-Fi card compatibility that lets users automatically transfer images wirelessly to a website or PC.

Set for release in mid-March, the TG-810 is available in silver and black for €299 and at that price, could be the answer to our handheld devices worries.
