Celtic defender Andreas Hinkel will be out for the season after suffering a knee injury.

The club confirmed that Hinkel had “suffered significant injury to his right knee after an accident in training.”

The German right-wing-back had an MRI scan, after which a “rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament” was diagnosed.

Hinkel will require surgery and could be out for up to nine months, meaning he will almost certainly miss the rest of the season.

The 28-year-old has made 79 league appearances for Celtic since joining from Sevilla for £1.9million in 2008.

He previously suffered a knee ligament injury in 2004, while playing for Stuttgart.

“Clearly this is very sad news for Andreas and he will be receiving every support from the Club,” a statement on the Bhoys’ website added.
