24/08 The End of the Day

Home time. Time to ponder the plight of Jewish soldiers in the German Army in World War 2 and to imagine a world without vowels.

Tonight’s Telly

Pick of the night: Documentary – Hitler’s Jewish Soldiers, RTE 2, 8.00pm.

This fascinating documentary takes a look at four Germans of Jewish heritage who found themselves in the unenviable position of being drafted into the Wehrmacht during World War II. While all faced tough moral dilemmas, one somehow found himself being the face of the Nazi’s recruitment drive in 1939.

Sporting highlight: Uefa Champions League, Sevilla v Braga, Setanta Ireland, 7.30pm.

It’s a bit of a lean night for sport fans unfortunately. Your one opportunity to catch some ball-on-field action is the Uefa Champions League clash between Sevilla and Braga. Should be well worth a look.

Mood Swingometer

Today JOE has mostly been feeling… despondent.

After a more than credible 5th place finish in the J-League after gameweek one in the Fantasy Premier League, the JOE selection, Joe’s Journeymen, plummeted to 36th place after a disastrous 44 points this week. There’s been a lot of finger pointing going on in JOE HQ this morning, but after plenty of soul-searching, the editorial team have resolved to get our challenge back on track next week. Did your team make the top five? Find out here.

Appreciate language

Words  – we use them every day. They are what we use to order food in restaurants. Without them it would be pot luck what they serve us. For all we know, we could have an allergy to the food, and that would hardly be a good thing. We could be in extreme discomfort because of this allergy, but we wouldn’t be able to tell anybody, on account of the fact we have no words.

Words make lives so much easier. Letters make words so much easier. In fact, it is difficult to imagine a word without any letters in it. The most important of these letters are vowels, a e i o u and sometimes y.
