Mick O’Dwyer is apparently being considered as John O’Mahony’s successor as manager of the Mayo senior football team.
Four names have been put forward for the position: John Maughan, Denis Kearney, Anthony McGarry and James Horan, and although the deadline passed for Mayo GAA clubs to submit nominations for the role last Friday, there is nothing to prevent County Board officers from nominating individuals.
According to the Mayo News, a number of prominent Mayo football supporters have expressed a wish that O’Dwyer be considered for the role, following his success with Kildare, Laois and Wicklow in recent years.
There is, however, also believed to be significant opposition to O’Dwyer’s appointment from within the county at both executive and club level.
Although they have not been nominated by the clubs, there remains a possibility that other names linked to the post – Peter Forde, Noel Connelly and Ray Dempsey, may also be sounded out about the possibility of succeeding John O’Mahony as manager of the Yew County.
