Irish boxer wins Youth Olympics gold medal

Eighteen-year old Irish boxer Ryan Burnett was victorious in the final of the light-flyweight division at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore.

Irish boxer Ryan Burnett secured a gold medal at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore on Wednesday morning.

Burnett, who hails from Belfast, defeated Azerbaijani boxer Salman Alizida 13-6 in the light-flyweight final.

It was a repeat of the AIBA World Youth final, where Alizida defeated Burnett in Baku, Azerbaijan .

“I’m thrilled with the win,” the 18-year-old said afterwards. “It’s a dream come true for me.”

“I couldn’t believe the level of support I got from the Irish fans this morning. They really made themselves heard and it was a great boost as it was tough in there.”

It was the first boxing final to take place at the Youth Olympics, making Burnett the first ever boxer to win a Youth Olympics gold medal.
