A referee stabbed and killed a footballer, before fleeing the scene during an amateur match between Boa-Fe and Redencao in Barreira, Brazil.

Referee Francisco Chaves got involved in a fight with Boa-Fe footballer Francisco da Silva during the match, after whistling for a foul against Da Silva’s team.

Franciso’s brother, Jose da Silva, ran into help his brother in the fight, at which point Chaves stabbed him in the chest.

Jose da Silva died on the pitch, after which Chaves fled the scene.

“Because it was an amateur game, there was no policing so the referee fled after the crime,” local policeman Marcos Paulo said.

“We’ve already made some searches for him and received information that he might hand himself in today but for now he’s a fugitive.”

Franciso da Silva is currently in hospital with stab wounds to his ribs.
