29/08 The Front Pages

JOE

The Sunday Independent has ‘They’re all away as we face Greek-style crisis,’ the story that the Dail won’t shorten their holidays despite immediate action required over debt. Also on the front page is ‘Girl, 12, murdered and body dumped,’ which is the story of Michaela Davis of Porterstown, whose body was discovered by a man walking his dog on the banks of the royal canal yesterday at 4pm. A 19-year-old man has been arrested.

The other headline on their front page is ‘O’Dea: It’s taking too long to bring the bankers to justice.’ Former minister Willie O’Dea said yesterday, “I have witnessed first-hand how exasperated and frustrated my former government colleagues are with the situation, but there is something I want to scream at the top of my voice: It’s taking too damn long.”

The Sunday Times have ‘Former mayor of Dublin in “whistleblower” dispute.’ Royston Brady has been sacked from a position as hotel manager of Roganstown Golf and Country Club. He claims that he was dismissed because he threatened to inform a couple that a bar exemption order they had paid over €500 for had not been applied for. Ian McGuinness, owner of the hotel, admits that the licence hadn’t been applied for but claims that was Royston Brady’s fault.

They also run with ‘Do social work or lose dole,’ which is the news that social protection minister, Eamon O Cuiv, will employ 10,000 people on the dole. They will be paid €210 a week for 19 hours social work. They also have ‘New drug to block lung cancer,’ which is the news that a drug commonly used by diabetics could prevent lung cancer. It won’t prevent other risks related to smoking however.
