Not much has gone right for the JOE punditry team of late, but we’re confident that, along with the season, our luck can change on the 1st day of September.

Our recent run of bad luck with the ponies must come to an end and we’re banking on Greg Fairley to steer ALWAYS DIXIE home in front at Brighton this afternoon.

The Mark Johnston runner is bang in form at the moment having been just touched off at Catterick last week. Always Dixie finished second, two lengths behind the winner, on that on occasion and was unfortunate not to stick to her winning ways having won at Beverley prior to that run.

Always Dixie will face stern opposition from Green Energy and Red Barcelona but we think she’ll do enough to land the 4.00 at Brighton at 10/3.

With neither of our bets on the US Open tennis at Flushing Meadows coming through in the last two days and with nothing happening elsewhere, we’re going to go back to horse racing for the second punt of the day.

A few runners in the 5.50 Maiden Stakes at Kempton have shown promise, but we’re going to plump for Stef Higgins’ two-year old, LES VERGUETTES to come home over six furlongs.

She looked good for a large part of her debut at Windsor last week before running out of steam into sixth, but the ground should be more suitable on this occasion and she has as good a chance as any in the ten-strong field.

Les Verguettes can be backed at 5/1 for this one.

JOE’s Daily Double: Always Dixie (Brighton, 4.00 @ 10/3) and Les Verguettes (Kempton, 5.50 @ 5/1).
