Tiger Woods has been named as a wildcard by Corey Pavin for the US Ryder Cup team, along with Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler and Zach Johnson.

The 34-year-old has had a torrid year, both on and off the golf course, but has improved his form recently with 12th and 11th place finishes in his last two tournaments.

“It’s great to be part of the team. I’m honoured to be selected,” Woods said.

2009 US Open champion Stewart Cink, 2007 US Masters champion Zach Johnson and 21-year-old golfing prodigy and Walker Cup veteran Rickie Fowler have also earned captain’s picks.

They will join Phil Mickelson, Hunter Mahan, Bubba Watson, Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Jeff Overton, Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar in the American team.

The Ryder Cup will take place between 1 and 3 October in Celtic Manor, Newport, South Wales.
