Gerard Houllier is set to become the new manager of Aston Villa, with French newspaper L’Equipe reporting that the Frenchman has agreed a two-year deal at Villa Park.
The 63-year old has emerged as the leading contender to replace Martin O’Neill at Villa Park and the report suggests that Houllier’s appointment will be confirmed by the club on Wednesday.
It will be Houllier’s second spell in charge of an English club, following six years in charge of Liverpool from 1998 to 2004, during which he won a UEFA Cup, FA Cup and Carling Cup treble in 2001.
He subsequently managed Lyon for a two year spell before becoming a technical director for the French national team. Houllier has also managed Paris St. Germain, RC Lens and the French national side.
Houllier was interviewed for the post by Villa chief Randy Lerner, along with current caretaker coach Kevin MacDonald and former Charlton and West Ham manager Alan Curbishley.
Contrary to reports, Phil Thompson, who served as Houllier’s assistant manager during his time at Liverpool, will not be joining Houllier at the club.
