The Front Pages

Looking at the front covers of the morning papers it’s all about Ivor Callely challenging the Oireachtas ruling which has banned him for 20 days from the Seanad for misrepresenting his residence to claim travel expenses. The battle hit the High Court as Callely’s lawyers warred over the €81,000 expenses and even claimed that Callely was entitled to financial damages.

‘Callely: I’m no chancer and I want damages’ – the headline reads on the Irish Independent.

‘Callely: I’ve been wrongly portrayed as a rogue politician’ – the Irish Examiner’s similar take on the saga.

Meanwhile, last night’s victory for the Republic of Ireland in the Euro 2012 qualifiers at the new Aviva Stadium came with a sigh of relief.

The Irish put three goals past minnows Andorra but unexpectedly conceded a goal in the first half while they seemed to be in cruise control.

‘Hat trick: Republic scores three to beat Andorra’ the Irish Times.
