Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe has been ruled out for three months after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury.

Defoe was forced to withdraw from England’s Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland on Tuesday evening after sustaining the injury and was originally set to be out of action for six weeks.

A statement on Tottenham’s official website revealed that the injury was worse than originally feared and Defoe is now set to be until Christmas, meaning he will miss the group stages of the Champions League, a large chunk of the Premier League campaign and two England internationals.

“Following a review by an ankle specialist, Jermain Defoe underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right ankle yesterday evening,” read the statement.

“The striker was forced off with the injury during England’s European Championship qualifier in Switzerland on Tuesday and has been ruled out of action for around three months.”
