Wayne Rooney has been sensationally axed from the Manchester United squad for today’s clash with Everton at Goodison Park.
The home fans had been preparing to give former Everton player Rooney a hostile reception in light of recent revelations about his private life.
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson excluded the 24-year old from his squad and admitted it was because of the potential effect of the abuse Rooney would have received from the home fans.
“He always gets a terrible reception here,†Ferguson told Sky Sports ahead of the game.
“We didn’t want to subject him to that so we left him out,†he added.
Ferguson did say, however, that Rooney would be included in the Manchester United side to face Rangers in the Champions League at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
Rooney and wife Coleen issued a statement last night appealing for privacy as they attempt to save their marriage. For more on that story, click here.
