Sofia Coppola’s new film was victorious at the Venice film festival, garnering the Golden Lion, the award for best picture.

Coppola’s drama Somewhere, a father-daughter drama set in Hollywood, was unanimously chosen by the Venice jury as the best film of the festival.

Jury president Quentin Tarantino said, “From that first enchanted screening it grew and grew in our hearts, in our minds, in our affections.”

The Silver Lion award for best director was won by Spanish filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia for his dark comedy A Sad Trumpet.

Jerzy Skolimowski’s Essential Killing won a special jury prize, while Vincent Gallo won best actor for the same film.

Monte Hellman, the 78-year-old director of The Shooting, Two-Lane Blacktop and this year’s Road to Nowhere, was awarded a Special Lion, essentially a lifetime achievement award.
