Manchester City are set to smash the British transfer record in January to sign Palermo’s Javier Pastore, according to reports in the News of the World.

Palermo signed Pastore from Argentinean club Talleres in 2009 for €8 million, and the 21-year old playmaker was integral to Palermo last season as they finished fifth.

He has been continually linked with moves to Manchester United, FC Porto, AC Milan and Chelsea, and Palermo turned down official approaches from Barcelona and Real Madrid this summer.

Manchester City are also said to be interested, with the News of the World claiming he would cost them €48 million, due to complications with an agent.

Pastore has played four times for Argentina, two of his caps coming at the World Cup.
