Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was victorious in the Italian Grand Prix, and moves up to third place in the drivers championship.

McLaren’s Jenson Button was ahead of Alonso for much of the race, but a terrific pit-stop by Ferrari on lap 37, allowed the Spaniard overtake the reigning World Champion.

“Most of the thanks for the win is to the mechanics,” said Alonso after the race.

“The pit stop felt so quick. I stopped, they changed tyres and there was a green light. I didn’t even have first gear in.

“When I came out of the pits I saw he was quite far behind and I thought okay, we have done it but I forgot he was coming at 320km/h and he closed very fast.

“We went in the first corner nearly side by side and then I nearly spun when I got on the throttle.”

Alonso is now only 21 points behind new leader Red Bull’s Mark Webber.

The Australian’s sixth place finish was enough for him to overtake Lewis Hamilton in the standings, as the McLaren driver had to retire after a collision with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa.
