A look at some of today’s main headlines:

‘Taxpayers face fresh onslaught in Budget’ – the Irish Independent.

‘Pub sector ‘in meltdown’ as sales fall 14%’ – the Irish Examiner.

‘Minister withdraws from launch of anti-evolution book’ – the Irish Times.

Expect the worst is the general message coming from the Finance Department. Taxpayers can expect one of the toughest budgets in the history of the state as Finance Minister Brian Lenihan yesterday announced cuts of a minimum of €3bn on 7 December.

In other news, Consumers are switching to drinking at home as sales in the pub sector are “in meltdown”, according to the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI). The DIGI estimated that 25,000 jobs could be lost by the end of the year in the drinks industry.

Meanwhile, Minister for Science Conor Lenihan will not now launch a book in Dublin which describes evolution as a fantasy and a hoax. John May, the author of The Origin of Specious Nonsense, asked Mr Lenihan to withdraw following controversy on the web.

Wayne Rooney has somehow salvaged his marriage with wife Coleen after crisis talks at the mfamily home yesterday.

The Manchester United ace will have to adhere to strict ground rules which Coleen has laid down, including a no-second-chance clause. If Rooney is caught cheating again, he’s gone.

Coleen also told Rooney he would risk never seeing his ten-month-old son Kai again. The Sun has a blow-by-blow account of how it all went down yesterday.

In football, the Champions League kicks-off tonight with Tottenham in action against Werder Bremen in Germany.

England manager candidate Harry Redknapp does not feel under pressure as many are billing Spurs’ performaces in Europe this season as an audition for Redknapp to take over from Fabio Capelloat the end of Euro 2012. The Star has more on this story.
