RTE commentating legend MÃcheal Ó Muircheartaigh is set to retire at the end of this year’s All-Ireland Championship.
Cork v Down will be the last All-Ireland Ó Muircheartaigh commentates on, after the Dún SÃon man announced his retirement.
He will, however, be in the commentary box for the International Rules series between Ireland and Australia.
“I decided maybe the time to go is when you’re still enjoying it. I’ve been at it a long time; it’s been most enjoyable and a privilege to be in that position,†the 80-year-old said on Morning Ireland this morning.
Ó Muircheartaigh has been working with RTE since 1949, his first assignment being the all-Irish commentary of the Railway Cup final on St Patrick’s Day of that year, when Munster defeated Connacht 5-3 to 2-9.
