Fine Gael has taken down its website and replaced it with a slightly unnerving video of Enda Kenny sitting down for a frank chat with the nation in a coffee shop.
The video opens with Enda adjusting himself in his seat before giving us a look that tells us he needs to have a serious chat – like the one you give a girlfriend you’re about to dump.
Oddly, some curious editing means Enda starts his message in the middle of a sentence: “…actually, I want to talk to ya about how we’re going to get out of this mess.”
Next, the politician, appearing somewhat dishevelled and with tousled bed hair, talks about how politicians talk too much. In a shameless bid to get us to do his job for him Enda then suggests we, the Irish people, get in touch with Fine Gael to let them know where we think the country has gone wrong, and what can be done to fix it.
“I’m going to replace it with a facility which will allow the people – you (points at the camera) to send in your complaints, your ideas and your proposals about what you think we should do,” explains Kenny.
The message, which is to replace the Fine Gael website for “a number of weeks” in the run-up to the election, is interspersed with Enda’s trademark painfully pregnant pauses and the clanking of cups and plates in the background.
The clip then finishes with a little spot of outro music, not dissimilar to the tune used by Nationwide.
A rolling list of one or two sentence comments from members of the public appears alongside the clip, and it includes such gems as “Not having Enda Kenny in office is what has gone wrong. “ and “Time for some change!”
Enda’s eyes regularly flick slightly upwards during the clip, giving the impression that he filmed it on his laptop webcam. This super cheap production method, coupled with the fact that he opted to shoot in a coffee shop, suggests Enda may well have thought this one up while on his lunch break.
Let’s hope he filled in his party colleagues before replacing the party website with his morning’s work.
