In today’s Hospital Pass, we consider how tickets for Sunday’s All-Ireland football final might actually be more valuable than gold bars and try to work out the many levelsof intrigue in John McIntyre’s resignation.

By Shane Breslin

We’ve tried to work out the cost of gold. But when you factor in bullion and coins, dust and nuggets, refined and unrefined, we’ve found that it’s quicker and easier just to speculate idly.

So that’s what we did.

And we speculate that tickets for Sunday’s All-Ireland final between Dublin and Kerry are actually more valuable than gold. Think about it – it’s a small piece of paper. It weights a couple of grams. And when it comes as part of a premium level package it can sell for almost €2000.

Yep, that’s right. Interest in Sunday’s big game, the first All-Ireland final between the two aristocrats of the game since 1985, is so feverish that four tickets for the Davin Stand sold on eBay for €1892 this week.

All we can say about that is whoever bought them clearly has

(a) more money than sense, and

(b) never been to Croker.

Because the Davin Stand is the worst place in the stadium to watch a game…

John McIntyre stars in the GAA’s Inception

As one eagle-eyed young cub in the office spotted today, John McIntyre has come over all Bernard Hopkins and spoke about himself in the third person again.

McIntyre has stepped down as manager of the Galway hurlers after three years of ups, downs and abysses.

The lads on Newstalk’s Off the Ball have a GAA coverage intro that features John McIntyre using the words “John McIntyre” while talking about John McIntyre.

And the Connacht Tribune sports editor was at it again after announcing his resignation, saying, “In my hearts of hearts, I knew the game was up for John McIntyre and this management team when we fell so disappointingly to Waterford in Thurles.”

Adding another layer or two of intrigue to the whole situation, those quotes appeared in the Connacht Tribune, so there must be a possibility that John McIntyre spoke about himself in the third person when giving an interview to … himself.

If you can figure that one out, you’re a better man than me. I’m still trying to get my head around The Usual Suspects, never mind Inception
