Spurs manager Harry Redknapp could be in the dock after reacting angrily to provocative chants from Shamrock Rovers supporters last night.
With little else to entertain them as their side slumped to a 4-0 defeat to the Premier League side, the Hoops fans amused themselves by taunting Redknapp about his financial difficulties, singing: “You should be in jail/ you should be in jail/Harry Redknapp/you should be in jail.”
Redknapp appeared to react with an angry clenched fist gesture towards the Rovers fans, but he seemed confused as to whether or not he actually did anything wrong.
When asked if he had made the gesture after the game, he muttered: “Not really. Did I make an ‘obscene’ gesture? No, I didn’t make… No.”
Redknapp, of course, has history on this side of the water, after reading the riot act to Robbie Keane and his then Spurs teammates for a secret Christmas party in CopperFace Jacks a few years back.
‘Arry didn’t think there was much explaining to do and tried to defuse the situation afterwards by expressing his love for all things Ireland and the Irish people.
“If you go and meet them (the chanting fans) afterwards they are probably lovely people,” he added.
“But they get together and shout a load of nonsense and that is football. That’s life. I don’t hold any grudges.”
If UEFA deem that Redknapp is guilty of making an offensive gesture, he will face a misconduct charge which is the last thing he needs at the moment. The man is just after recovering from heart surgery and faces trial next month over alleged tax evasion over a five-year period between 2002 and 2007.
That money, apparently, was just resting in his account.
