The 2012 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas will be treated to the future of television next week as LG unveils a 55” TV that’s only 4mm thick.

The new OLED TV uses the same technology that is currently being used in high-end smart phones, because the technology produces a much better resolution compared to any other TV sets (of the same size) on the market.

The resolution is much better because the ‘organic light-emitting diode’ technology sees a refresh rate that’s 1,000 times faster than other LED technology.

LG claims on its website that “OLED TV generates the most natural colours of any TV set at a much lower price point than could have been achieved using the standard manufacturing process”.

Not only is the TV 4mm thick, it also weighs a mere 7.5kg. Sadly, there’s no word yet as to when the TV will hit Irish shores or what the ballpark figure for the set will be.

The President and CEO of LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company, Havis Kwon, said that: “OLED is clearly the future of home TV entertainment and LG is very focused on making this exciting technology as easy as possible for consumers to embrace.”

What’s next? A mobile phone that talks back? Oh.
