Sir Alex Ferguson might not have to look far for the solution to his midfield crisis as reports are suggesting that Paul Scholes may be about to make a sensational return.

With Darren Fletcher ruled out indefinitely, Tom Cleverley also sidelined, Ryan Giggs showing his age and Michael Carrick and Anderson struggling to overcome mediocrity, United have looked increasingly lightweight in the middle of the park, leading to suggestions that Fergie may look to splash the cash for a midfielder in January.

Despite dubious speculation linking United with a move for Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, Fergie has insisted that there will be no movement in the transfer window and that he is happy with his current crop.

The Sun, however, beg to differ, claiming this morning that ginger legend Scholes is ready to come to the rescue for his old boss and return in an attempt to revive the champions’ flagging title challenge.

The (cough) ever-reliable red-top say that Scholes, who retired in the summer, is already missing the cut and thrust of Premier League football and being part of a side he represented with distinction for nearly two decades.

Scholes remains a part of the set-up at Old Trafford, helping out with the coaching staff and training with the reserves in an effort to keep his fitness ticking over, while he is often visible in the crowd at United’s home games.

Fergie has been forced to employ Wayne Rooney, Phil Jones and even Rafael da Silva in midfield at various stages throughout the season in an attempt to solve the problem and he could do worse than call on Scholes rather than maintain the sticking plaster tactics he has adopted at times.

Scholes’ return would almost certainly be greeted with delight by United fans, but as true as the fact that he is an absolutely abysmal tackler is the fact that he is not a man to go back on his word.

A possibility perhaps, but we’re going to file this under the ‘unlikely’ category for the time being at least.
