Players from Bundesliga side Hannover were in for a somewhat raunchy surprise when asked to fill out a psychological survey recently.
Footballers are used to filling out the occasional survey, but instead of asking them for their personal goals or what team they play as on FIFA, this survey wanted to delve deep into their sexual desires.
One of the questions on the survey, which players were invited to complete on a voluntary basis, included the following statements: “I am what you could call sexually unrestrained”; “I want any sex I can get” or “I have a lot of erotic fantasies”, and asked players to respond on a scale of -3 to +3.
There were just short of 130 questions in the survey in total and, clearly not the prudish sort, coach Mirko Slomka, said that his players, if not the public, were free to see his responses if they wanted.
Speaking about the rather alternative survey, Slomka told German newspaper Bild: “With this test I know how I can best reach each player.”
The survey is known as the Reiss survey, and puts forward the theory that humans are driven by 16 basic desires. Any player that completes it will have their responses evaluated by Hannover’s ‘motivation consultant’ in an effort to highlight their individual core values and goals.
“Each player needs different conditions to perform at his best over a long period. This is what I have to look into. Every player should have the feeling that his individuality is being considered,” said Boltersdorf.
A somewhat bizarre story, but perhaps not the strangest tale of a sexual nature to emerge from the Bundesliga in recent years.
When Louis van Gaal was manager of Bayern Munich, you may remember, he once pulled down his trousers and flashed his genitals to his players to show them that he had balls, so maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised.
