Two-footed tackles are the talk of the town since Vincent Kompany’s red card on Sunday, but there are many who will argue that Glen Johnson was guilty of far worse last night.
In the dying stages of Liverpool’s 1-0 Carling Cup victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last night, Johnson dived in on Joleon Lescott and although he won the ball and there was no contact with the ample-foreheaded Citeh defender, Johnson was off his feet and his studs were clearly showing.
Manchester City lacked a Wayne Rooney like character to demonstrate to referee Lee Mason that Johnson went in with two feet and Lescott didn’t cause much of a fuss, unlike his manager, who questioned the decision not to take any action against Johnson in the immediate aftermath.
If the letter of the law was applied, Johnson would surely have seen red, but he could yet face disciplinary action as Mason took no action against the Liverpool defender and the FA have the power to revisit the incident.
Whether they will or not remains to be seen, but we can only wonder what Vincent Kompany made of it all as he contemplated his four game ban watching on from the half-empty stands.
We smell another Facebook rant on the way.
