If it was anyone else we’d be crying foul at the sheer vanity of it all, but if anybody deserves to wear boots commemorating a personal achievement, it’s Lionel Messi.
The Argentine genius picked up his third successive Ballon D’Or award in Zurich during the week, cementing his status as the best player of his generation and one the greatest of all time. Messi is only the fourth player to have won the award three times and only the second player after Michel Platini to have won it three times on the trot.
Considering he’s only 24, he should be ready to make a lot more room on the mantelpiece as it is highly likely that he’ll be the receiving it again once or twice before he hangs up his boots.
While Messi seemed a tad uncomfortable in the velour number he wore to the gala do in Switzerland, he’ll feel far more at home in the special boots Adidas have designed to honour his magnificent achievement.

The white and gold Adidas adizero F50 boots have been embossed with three golden balls, each with the year he won the prized award, and will be worn by Messi only for tomorrow’s clash with Real Betis, before he debuts the brand’s new MiCoach range from next week on.
They’re not bad to look at, but in all honesty, Messi is so good that he could be wearing two left clogs and he’d still do the business on the pitch.
