Left out in the cold at Newcastle during Demba Ba’s hot streak, Leon Best came back with a bang – and the winner against QPR – at the Sports Direct Arena earlier today.

Best ensured that there would be no fairytale start to Mark Hughes’ reign as QPR manager with the only goal of the game shortly before half-time.

It was a quite brilliant effort, with Best (cliché alert) showing great feet for a big man and effortlessly cutting inside Luke Young before slotting past Paddy Kenny with an assurance belying the fact that he hadn’t scored in 11 league games.

With Ba in Africa at the Cup of Nations for the forseeable future, Best has a major chance to stake his claim for a place in the squad for the Euros, even if it seems an unlikely prospect at this early stage.

It’s quite clear from their exchanges in the past that Trap isn’t Leon’s biggest fan (photos like this didn’t help), but he brings a different option to the party than the other strikers at Trap’s disposal, so he can’t be ruled out just yet.

Certainly, more goals like this one won’t do his chances any harm.
